Abstract
I. Introduction This report describes a group of scales which have been developed in order to study family interaction. These scales enable us to make "blind" interpretations of a family's interaction. The scales will be outlined, and examples of their application will be given. Some preliminary findings in support of the validity and reliability of the method will also be presented. This project is part of a larger one in progress at the Mental Research Institute of the Palo Alto Medical Research Foundation investigating various methods of studying the relationship between family interaction and individual personality.*This approach is related to and in part derived from a theoretical framework being developed by various researchers at the Mental Research Institute. The framework contains certain assumptions and hypotheses about family behavior and its relationship to personality functioning.
