THE REACTING CAPACITY OF THE GONADS AFTER ADRENALECTOMY AS JUDGED BY THE RESPONSE TO GONADOTROPHINS IN THE RAT

Abstract
Wistar rats aged 76-109 days were adrenalectomized and maintained on 0.25 mg. desoxycorticosterone acetate subcut. daily. These animals, and controls not receiving DCA were injd. with moderately pure prepns. of FSH and LH mixture ("Antex,"Leo) and with purified LH ("Gonadex," Leo) in dosage of 37 and 39 I.U. respectively. Ovarian and testicular wts., and gonadal histology were studied. Accessory male and female sex organs were also weighed. Adrenalectomy failed to inhibit the response of ovaries or testes to gonadotropins. Secondary sex organs of male responded more definitely to testicular hormone produced gonadotropin stimulus after adrenalectomy than with intact adrenals.
