Spirituality and the caregiver

Abstract
Spiritual aspects of care with the terminally ill has been rarely discussed in professional literature. To many caregivers, the notion of anything spiritual signals a referral to a chaplain rather than an exploration between caregiver and patient. In order to examine the role that spirituality plays for caregivers, eight professionals working with the terminally ill were interviewed. The common thread found in all the interviews was the heightened spirituality experienced by the caregivers as a result of their work with the terminally ill, and the impact that it has upon the patient. All caregivers felt they received more from their patients than they were able to give.
