Lower Esophageal Sphincter Pressure (LESP) and Esophageal Function in Obese Humans

Abstract
Esophageal manometrics were obtained on 25 morbidly obese patients who were candidates for gastric bypass surgery. The majority (88%) were young or middle-aged women who exceeded their ideal weight by an average of 170 lbs. The mean lower esophageal sphincter pressure of the group was normal (27.2 ±2.1 S.E. mm Hg) and hypotensive sphincter (less than 15 mm Hg) was present in three of 25 patients. Reflux could be demonstrated by a pH electrode in only four of 21 patients. These studies do not support the commonly accepted notion that obesity per se predisposes to gastro-esophageal reflux.
