Abstract
Esophageal manometrics were obtained on 25 morbidly obese patients who were candidates for gastric bypass surgery. The majority (88%) were young or middle-aged women who exceeded their ideal weight by an average of 170 lbs. The mean lower esophageal sphincter pressure of the group was normal (27.2 ±2.1 S.E. mm Hg) and hypotensive sphincter (less than 15 mm Hg) was present in three of 25 patients. Reflux could be demonstrated by a pH electrode in only four of 21 patients. These studies do not support the commonly accepted notion that obesity per se predisposes to gastro-esophageal reflux. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
