Abstract
A classical model that qualitatively describes the pressure-induced off-centre to on-centre transition of an impurity ion such as Ag+ in RbCl is considered. The range of pressures over which the transition takes place in the model is comparable to that observed experimentally. Possible extensions of this model to glasses are noted. Keywords
