Abstract
Central nervous system changes were studied in 10 cases of poliomyelitis with severe pulmonary edema. All cases revealed extensive damage to both the dorsal nuclei of the vagus and to the medial reticular nuclei of the medulla. Central cases without pulmonary edema did not show similar changes. In view of these pathologic changes, it was felt that the pulmonary edema was due to heart failure produced by tachycardia and decreased cardiac efficiency due to vagal damage and to vasomotor collapse secondary to involvement of the vasomotor centers within the medulla. Keywords
