Abstract
132In this chapter only the sulfate conjugation of low-molecular weight substances, both endogenous and exogenous, will be considered. The sulfation of endogenous macromolecules such as glycosaminoglycans falls outside the scope of this book, although much work has been done on the chemical characterization of these highly sulfated compounds, and on the incorporation of [35S]-sulfate into tissue in vivo and in tissue slices of cell preparations.113 Similarly, sulfated lipids (for instance cerebroside sulfate) will not be covered; recent reviews on sulfolipids are available.14,15
