Abstract
A method for measuring the species density and temperature in a high-current arc column subjected to a steep axial pressure gradient is described. The method has been used to determine the temperature variation in the thermal region surrounding the arc core so that estimates can be made, together with the additional knowledge of the gas velocity, of the axial enthalpy flow at various axial arc stations. These results have been used to confirm energy and momentum conservation for the arcing environment by Malghan (1975).Keywords
