Abstract
17 patients were treated and the effects observed over a period of at least 6 mos. in 12 cases, 4 mos. in 4 cases and 3 mos. in the other. 16 of the subjects had benign hypertension and 1 had malignant essential hypertension. Hydergine, an adrenergic blocking drug, was given intraven. at 1st and later by mouth and intramusc. injn. for a period of 14 days. 13 cases were relieved or improved. The fall in blood pressure was 2-66 mm. Hg systolic and 6-40 mm. Hg diastolic. Hydergine acts by its adrenergic blockade and possibly by its central nervous depression. The over-all blood pressure reduction was moderate. No final conclusions were made.
