To the Editor: Escherichia coli 0157:H7 is the causative organism of hemorrhagic colitis and is one of the agents associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome.1 2 3 4 5 Although hamburger has been implicated as the source of E. coli 0157:H7,1 , 3 , 6 , 7 the reservoir and mode of transmission of the agent remain unknown. We encountered sporadic cases and an outbreak of hemorrhagic colitis, and although our attempts to identify the source of the agent have been unsuccessful, the epidemiologic data we have gathered seem to indicate that humans may be a source of E. coli 0157:H7 and that person-to-person contact could be an important mode of . . .Keywords
