Abstract
Synopsis A truss model is analysed to estimate the collapse load of a deep beam with a shear-span|effective-depth ratio of less than 1·0. The expressions for collapse load in the flexural and shear-proper modes of failure, as well as expressions for the value of the reinforcement ratio separating them are derived and verged against the available test results. Good agreement is found. An analysis of the beams containing web reinforcement is also presented and verified against the available test results with good agreement. Finally the design of deep beams in practice is considered and a design example is given. Keywords
