Hyperoxaluria with Intestinal Disease

To the Editor: In the June 29 issue of the Journal, Smith, Fromm and Hoffmann report the occurrence of hyperoxaluria in patients with intestinal disease. We have studied six patients with regional enteritis in whom varying lengths of terminal ileum have been resected because of complications from the bowel disease. Urinary oxalate excretion was directly related to the length of resected bowel. Increased urinary oxalate excretion was noted only in those patients in whom more than 30 cm of ileum had been resected.
