The Young Parents' Program: Working with Young Pregnant Women and Young Parents

Abstract
This paper details the philosophy, development and operation of an innovative community organisation which provides services to young pregnant women and young parents in Queensland. Prevailing attitudes and assumptions about teenage pregnancy and parenting are challenged. The key elements of our approach to teenage pregnancy and parenting are described. The Young Parents' Program has used concepts and strategies drawn from knowledge in several areas — feminism, social model of health, adolescence and group work. The relationship between these ideas and the services provided is explained.
