Abstract
The syndrome caused by a low concn. of serum K may occur in association with diabetic acidosis. A patient is reported who responded well to treatment of the acidosis but developed generalized muscular weakness and respiratory difficulty. The serum K concn. was 10 mg. %, the normal 16-22 mg. %. The symptoms rapidly disappeared after oral admn. of KC1. A review of diabetic case histories suggests that the mortality rate of diabetic acidosis could be decreased by early recognition and adequate therapy of the K-deficiency syndrome. Admn. of K may be attended by toxicity and precautions are advocated. Keywords
