Abstract
The symptoms of tomato silvering result from a change in the sub-epidermal (L2) layer of the apical meristem and in the tissues derived from it. The epidermis and core tissues are unchanged and differentiate normal shoots when adventitious buds are induced to grow. The change in the L2 layer is characterized by slower cell division particularly towards the end of the normal division phase of tissue growth. The perpetuation of silvering is discussed in relation to the plant’s pattern of development.
