Abstract
The folk wisdom of most cultures has celebrated the interaction between infant and mother as one of the decisive social relations in the human life cycle. It did not, however, become a legitimate topic for empirical research until the beginning of this century, so that the biologic and experiential determinants of an infant's social development are only now being documented in controlled observations. Research to date has nevertheless identified some of the essential elements that must be encompassed in any comprehensive theory of early social development.The observation of infants in their natural environment has disposed of the traditional prejudice . . .Keywords
