Abstract
Incoherent scattering of neutrons from the protons of squaric acid H2C4O4 has been studied and shows a remarkable directional dependence of both the elastic and the inelastic component. The observed spectra can be accounted for by a double well potential model for the proton in the hydrogen bond. However, asymmetric population of the well persists into the high temperature tetragonal phase, in agreement with previous suggestions. Keywords
