The Dielectric Constant and Electric Moment of some Alcohol Vapors

The dielectric constant and electric moment of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl alcohol vapors.—Measurements of the dielectric constant of these alcohol vapors were made at several temperatures. A new method was used for measuring the pressure of the hot vapor. The agreement with Debye's equation for the dielectric constant of gases is good at higher temperatures where there is no association. Association is discussed. The moments are calculated and the following results obtained: methyl alcohol $A=1.09\mathrm{}\times {10}^{-3\mathrm{}}$, $\mu ={1.68}_0\times {10}^{-18\mathrm{}}$; ethyl alcohol, $A=1.58\mathrm{}\times {10}^{-3\mathrm{}}$, $\mu ={1.69}_6\times {10}^{-18\mathrm{}}$; $n$-propyl alcohol, $A=2.30\mathrm{}\times {10}^{-3\mathrm{}}$, $\mu ={1.65}_7\times {10}^{-18\mathrm{}}$; $n$-butyl alcohol, $A=2.91\mathrm{}\times {10}^{-3\mathrm{}}$, $\mu ={1.65}_9\times {10}^{-18\mathrm{}}$.
