Abstract
This paper summarizes noise reduction research and development programs of The Boeing Company from the early 1950s to the present time. Discussions concentrate on the background for each program, present the end results obtained or progress made, and introduce detailed descriptions of key programs to be covered in three related Boeing papers during the same ASA meeting. Summary descriptions are included for acoustic treatments that have been developed, permitting all current Boeing turbofan-powered commercial aircraft models to comply with applicable U.S. Government and international noise rules. The benefits attainable through noise-abatement operating procedures are discussed, along with the related need for compatible land-use planning. The paper concludes with a discussion of unsolved problems that need attention by the scientific community to permit continuing reductions in aircraft noise. Keywords
