Submergence Behavior in Gerris: Underwater Basking

Abstract
A new type of underwater activity is reported for water striders. The response is activated by low temperatures and was observed in 4 spp. of Gerris [G. buenoi, G. comatus, G. incognitus and G. pingreensis] in the field. The adaptive significance of the behavior probably involves increasing the rate of gonad development in overwintered adults. Other subsurface behaviors recorded in Gerris are reviewed and briefly discussed.
