Abstract
A group of 513 patients with inactive tuberculosis was studied to determine the effect of isoniazid in preventing reactivation. Of these, 247 received isoniazid in doses of 300 mg daily while 266 served as controls. The drug was administered for 2 years. After discontinuance of treatment both groups remained under observation to determine post-treatment effects. During the 2-year period of drug administration there were twice as many reactivations among those receiving medication. This protective action persisted for the 1 1/2-year period after the drug was discontinued. In spite of the protection provided by isoniazid, its use on a large scale to prevent reactivation among persons who have not received antimicrobial therapy is not considered practicable. Keywords
