Abstract
A specific and relatively rapid method is described for the laboratory identification of poliovirus isolates by direct fluorescent antibody (FA) staining. Eighty-five stool samples were comparatively tested by the FA method and the routine neutralization test. Of 38 specimens found to contain the three types of polioviruses, 34 were correctly identified by the FA method. No false positives were found in the 47 negative specimens although 18 of these contained other enteroviruses. While this procedure is considered slightly less sensitive than routine methods, as a screening procedure it was found to be more rapid, simpler, and more economical than the usual neutralization techniques presently employed for identification of poliovirus isolates. Keywords
