Abstract
A clear inverse relation exists between rates of 1st admission to hospitals for mental disease and 2 sorts of socio-economic variables. These are residential stability - instability, with low rates in general for the more stable (nonmigrant) elements of the population and higher rates for migrants. Family stability - instability with low rates for married and much higher in order for widowed and single, and for divorced and separated. Performance and status, as measured by level of schooling and occupational class is the 2nd factor. Lower rates prevail for the higher educational levels and high rates for the lower levels. Nonwhites were in an unfavorable position but because color controls were not available for the present study, color as a factor cannot be included.
