Abstract
17 strains were investigated for cultural, serological and physiological features, the general cultural morphology under low magnification being most characteristic. The following features were then investigated for each strain: lesser differences in morphology; anaerobic growth; precipitation of horse serum; the effects of yeast extract and pH; ability to ferment carbohydrates, reduce methylene blue and hemolyze horse serum; pathogenicity to mice; resistance to penicillin. All these organisms can occur as filterable bodies which measure approx. 150-200 m[mu] diam. from which longer very delicate cells can develop. They are all insensitive to the bacteriostatic action of penicillin. Many of them (Kleinberger 1936 and others) are variants of bacteria which are larger and susceptible to penicillin. The major differences from other bacteria appear to be mainly physiological.
