Abstract
The wide use of serum Fe determination by automatic analyzers may lead to low values being taken as evidence of Fe deficiency. Determining serum ferritin concentration in such cases provides rapid and reliable information to distinguish between reactive hypoferremia and Fe deficiency hypoferremia, as demonstrated in tests on 71 patients with reproducible hypoferremia. In 31 patients there was reactive hypoferremia, in 40 Fe deficiency hypoferremia. Keywords
