Abstract
Case studies of the author's involvement in political activities are presented. These are drawn upon to discuss issues raised by Foucault, Gramsci and others about the social roles of intellectuals. The professoriate is conceived to experience a contradiction, partly couched in terms of academic freedom as a “liberating right” versus an “immobilizing chain.” The author urges the professoriate to become activist in order to avoid their assimilation and conquest as intellectuals by and in the interest of elites.
