The structure of the Charlie–Gibbs Fracture Zone

Abstract
This short paper summarizes the results of a major combined seismic refraction and gravity survey carried out over the Charlie–Gibbs Fracture Zone. Crust 3–4.5 km thick, and possessing an anomalously low seismic velocity structure, was found beneath the fracture zone and gradual crustal thinning was detected over some 40 km to the south of the transform. The most plausible explanation for the ridge to the north is that it consists of uplifted normal crust.
