Abstract
A simple expt. is described to demonstrate the fact that at a depth of approx. 5 ft. hydrostatic pressure is sufficient to prevent inhalation. The air pressure above the water in a vertical glass tube is reduced by a normal inhalation. The height of rise of the water is equal to the depth to which the unprotected chest may be submerged in water before breathing through a tube becomes impossible.
