Abstract
The erosion-deposition process of a tungsten surface bombarded by Maxwellian carbon ions is investigated using a Monte Carlo simulation model which combines dynamic composition change in the surface layer with transport of sputtered particles in a scrape-off layer plasma. During ion bombardment at ion temperatures of 50–70 eV, a transition from erosion to deposition is observed without transport in the plasma. With transport, however, only carbon deposition occurs due to redeposition of sputtered carbon atoms. Keywords
