Abstract
In certain areas where kwashiorkor is prevalent in children, maize comprises much of the diet. When growing moakeys were fed diets of unenriched and unsupplemented corn meal for varying periods, a ration which is deficient in certain inorganic elements, essential amino acids, and vitamins, a syndrome with many resemblances to kwashiorkor was observed. This consisted of growth failure, loss of weight, weakness, apathy, edema with hypoalbuminemia and fat accumulation in the liver. The latter began periportally and spread to involve the entire lobule.
