Abstract
The growth of Streptothrix corallinus in salt-sugar medium containing torulin is enhanced by addition of mannitol, even when the latter has been recrystallized after treatment with charcoal at various H-ion concentrations. Mannitol prepared by reduction of mannose, itself inert, is equally effective; but not dulcitol, sorbitol, glycerol or inositol. This increase, similar to that obtained with crude watery extracts of yeast, is not due to greater fat production. The whole or part of the mannitol molecule appears to be a specific source of food supply for this organism.
