Biological Fluidized Bed Reactor: Hydrodynamics, Biomass Distribution and Performance

Abstract
Performance of a pilot-scale denitrifying biological fluidized bed was analyzed with special consideration to the effects of mean cell residence time (MCRT) and biomass distribution in the reactor. An optimum MCRT exists at which volumetric removal rate is maximized. The decline of substrate removal rate at short MCRT is caused by small amount of biomass in the reactor. At long MCRT the decline of substrate removal rate was attributed to decreasing biofilm effectiveness and smaller solids holdup.
