Abstract
Natriuretic activity of atrial myocardial extracts was determined by bioassay in rats. An extract from rats fed low-Na chow for 3 wk contained significantly greater (P < 0.01) natriuretic activity than extracts from controls. Extracts from rats fed low-Na chow for 1 wk or from rats fed normal chow with saline to drink for 1 or 3 wk did not have significantly different natriuretic activities compared to controls. However, the atrial natriuretic activity of the 3-wk saline group was significantly greater (P < 0.05) than the 1-wk saline group. Changes in dietary Na intake evidently are associated with changes in atrial natriuretic activity. However, the precise role of atrial natriuretic factor in Na homeostasis remains to be elucidated. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
