Dispersal of European Red Mite on Umbrella-Trained Concord Grapevines 1

Abstract
Initial infestation by European red mite, Panonychus ulmi (Koch), on ‘Concord’ grapes trained to the umbrella-kniffen system began in the upper, older portion of the vine and spread outward along the shoots and downward over the vine. The heaviest infestation remained in the upper portion of the vine for most of the growing season and on the eastern side of the vine (vineyard rows running east and west). Winter egg deposition was heavier in the upper, older portion of the vine and on the eastern side of the vine. During pruning an average of 79% of the winter eggs were removed from the vines. Only 22% of the winter eggs were removed from the upper portion of the vines.
