Abstract
In an extended study of nitro-paraffins and their derivatives, l,l-dichloro-l-nitro-ethane was found to possess significant characteristics as a fumigant. The molecule offers a combination of toxic and fugitive characteristics. The compound is a liquid at all ordinary temps., but will vaporize with satisfactory rapidity from a suitable porous material, such as Celotex. It has a distinct warning odor. Its flash point is safe. The vapor has marked penetrating properties and will pass rapidly through such material as flour, grain, woolens, and other articles. It will disappear rapidly on ventilation. Toxicity to typical stored-product insects exposed to the vapors is of the order of 5-6 mg. per liter in 8 hrs. Toxicity studies with reference to man are not complete, but indicate relative safety. Tests of many manufactured articles exposed to the vapor showed no injury. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
