Abstract
Chemisorption of oxygen decreases the photoluminescence quantum efficiency of zinc oxide phosphors, hydrogen increases the quantum efficiency. The systematical behaviour of two series of reduced and oxydised samples indicates that radiationless surface recombination rates are influenced by electrical fields due to sorption layers. Photodesorption of oxygen is detectable by a slow build up of photoluminescence which is separable from the low temperature build up due to trap filling. Keywords
