Abstract
Bitterman (19: 3315; 20: 3070), Hoffman (20: 3110), and Tinker (20: 570; 21: 703) have conducted experiments which show that rate of blinking is not a valid measure of visual fatigue. Several of these experiments are to be criticized, however, in that the procedure used involved not "normal reading but a critical examination of printed matter with the attendant requirements for speed and accuracy." Moreover, in the two experiments which employed procedures similar to those used by the present writer, "the experimental results agreed qualitatively . . … Therefore, none of the tests conducted by Tinker, Bitterman or Hoffman detracts from the validity of the blink-rate as a criterion of ease of seeing."
