Abstract
This paper points out that the methods of photoelastic stress analysis can be carried over to the study of the flow of fluids by making use of the double refraction developed in viscous shear. The effect is referred to as the “photoviscous effect.” Suitable liquids are tabulated, the method of calibration is described, and qualitative results are shown for a few simple conditions obtained in an experimental liquid tunnel.
