Elution Gradients Generated Under Hydrostatic Equilibrium Employing Various Devices and Solvents of Different Density

Abstract
Calculation of the shape of gradients produced under conditions of hydrostatic equilibrium has been possible only for solvents of equal density and in apparatus of specific geometry. A method of calculation of the shape of the gradient for any pair of solvents in apparatus of any geometry is presented. Solutions for specific cases are also given and the application of elution gradients to the separation of urinary metabolites of steroids by liquid-liquid partition chromatography on columns of celite is illustrated.
