ON THE MECHANISM OF PARATHYROID HORMONE ACTION

Abstract
Intravenous injection of parathyroid extract into dogs led to a rise in serum Ca with no fall in plasma inorganic phosphate. The latent period was not reduced by the simultaneous injection of CaCl2 solution. Hence parathyroid hormone raises serum Ca, not by lowering the renal threshold for phosphate or by making serum a better solvent for Ca compounds, but probably by direct action on the bones, stimulating osteoclasis.
