Abstract
Antidepressants are classified according to their mode of action on the central nervous system. Antidepressant drugs currently in use are surveyed and their effectiveness indicated. The authors also discuss the nature of depressive states and the indications for treatment of them by the means now available. They emphasize that further clinical studies are needed, as well as practical and reliable psychometric and physiologic methods to evaluate treatment. Keywords
