Lymphocyte Subsets in Human Colostrum with Special Reference to that of Undernourished Mothers

Abstract
Colostral samples collected from 30 Indian lactating mothers were studied for their cellular composition with special reference to B-cells, T-cells and their subsets. Of the 30 mothers, 15 were well nourished and the remaining 15 were undernourished. The total cell count of the colostrum from the undernourished group was significantly less than that of the well nourished group. The counts of T3+ (pan-T cells), T4+ (T-helper), and T8+ (suppressor cells) were lower in the undernourished group compared to well nourished group. However, these differences were not significant. Interestingly, the T4+/T8+ ratio remained unaltered in the colostrum of both the groups.
