ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE (ACTH) IN URINE*

Abstract
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) activity was detected in the urine of normal men and women by means of the intraperit. and intracardial admn. of fresh urine to hypophysectomized rats. Normal men (20-40 yrs. of age) excreted between 1.0 and 3.1 I.U. of ACTH/l., and normal women (20-40 yrs. of age) excreted between 1.0 and 8.2 I.U./1. There was tendency to increased ACTH excretion during the 1st postoperative day in surgical patients. No increased excretion of ACTH could be demonstrated in patients with rheumatic fever, following the admn. of 20-80 I.U. of ACTH per day. One patient with active Cushing''s disease showed a 5-10-fold increase in ACTH excretion above normal, whereas a 2d patient whose disease was inactive excreted an amt. of ACTH similar to that of normal subjects. A spray-dried prepn. of pregnant mare''s urine contained a significant amt. of ACTH.
