Abstract
This article highlights the problem of inappropriate ethnic categorisation in official statistics. Ethnic categories are inappropriate, I argue, because they are static and fail to reflect the reality of group boundaries which tend to change and overlap. The paper demonstrates that one of the most dynamic and expanding categories has been redefined in ways which make the issue of race relations more difficult to address. Building on these themes the paper draws attention to a number of implications for policy making and points the direction towards improved classificatory schema.
