Abstract
Can we develop a theory that will help with the practice of distance education? We may do so not by proposing a single, all‐embracing theory but by exploring theories and generalisations that have been seen to have practical application. Hilary Perraton developed this paper in the course of teaching an MA course in distance education. He is an education officer at the Commonwealth Secretariat but writes in a personal capacity. Keywords
