Neighboring and Urbanism

Abstract
A large number of studies have found that there is a residual correlation between urbanism and neighboring even after relevant variables have been controlled. This article suggests that such correlation is an artifact of how neighboring is defined. When the more typically used model that defines the neighbor relationship as a subcategory of friendship is replaced by a more limited one that assumes only a sense of connection, the residual correlation disappears. Instead, neighboring is better explained by the local ecological factors of housing and population heterogeneity.
