Abstract
A finite-volume method is developed and applied to a flow about a ship. It employs an explicit timemarching procedure with the sub-grid scale turbulence model without using the wall-function on the body surface. The averaging treatment is on a much smaller level than the method so far used. The curvilinear grid system is fitted not only to the hull surface but also to the free-surface, which is deformed by the wave motion. The comparison between simulated and measured results shows quite excellent agreement in the waves and marginally satisfactory agreement in the wake distribution. The simulated results reveal some interesting features of the flow, such as the systematic formation of the longitudinal vortices, the generation of vortices in the vicinity of the free-surface, and the complicated interaction of vortices near the after end of a ship. Keywords
