Collision-limited lifetimes of atom traps

Abstract
We carry out a simple calculation of the rate at which atoms confined within an atom trap are kicked out of the trap by elastic collisions with background gas molecules. The calculated rates are in good agreement with the observed rates and are remarkably insensitive to the trap depth.Keywords
