LXXXVII.Adsorption at the surface of a solution

Abstract
The values obtained by Schofield and Rideal for the adsorption of ethyl alcohol at the surface of its aqueous solutions are shown to refer not to the total amount present at the surface but to the surface excess. A method is suggested for the calculation of the total amount, and the values thus obtained are in accord with the conception of a mimoleeular layer of alcohol at the surface o[ solutions containing more than 30 per cent. of alcohol. Similar results are obtained for solutions of methyl alcohol and of acetone.
