Abstract
In jumping spiders (Salticidae), capture of the prey is the final member of a chain of hunting responses; Its occurrence depends on characteristics of the incentive as well as on hunger level of the predator. Using small moving spheres as models of prey, it was shown that a longer period of food deprivation significantly increased the probability of the initial hunting response, orientation, and the succeeding response, pursuit. Variation in the visual characteristics of the incentive (size, color) produced significant effects which were specific to a particular response within the chain of hunting responses. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
